  4.     Once hailed as the most liberal Communist leader in Eastern
  5. Europe, Janos Kadar has become a political pariah in his own
  6. country. Following his ouster as General Secretary last May
  7. after almost 32 years in power, Kadar, 76, remained party
  8. president. Last week Kadar was stripped of the largely
  9. ceremonial job and expelled from the Central Committee.

  11.     Party officials cited Kadar's poor health as the reason for
  12. his removal, but some Western and Hungarian political analysts
  13. speculate that the government wanted him out of the way before
  14. it rehabilitated the reputation of Imre Nagy, Prime Minister of
  15. Hungary at the time of the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Kadar is
  16. said to have given evidence at the trial of Nagy, who was hanged
  17. for treason. Others say that the party, by breaking with
  18. "Kadarism," wished to underline its pro-reform stance.

  20.     "In my political work, I probably committed errors," wrote
  21. Kadar in a letter to the party's Central Committee after his
  22. removal. "But all my actions were dictated by good intentions."
